Ririe, Idaho
Canyon log homes and rustic hickory character
Ririe sits where the farm valley meets the foothills, and its homes lean rustic to match. Out on the acreage toward Kelly Canyon and Heise, you find log homes, cabins and ranch houses floored in knotty pine, rustic hickory and character-grade oak. That flooring is chosen for its knots and natural marks, which changes how we work it. A smooth, furniture-grade sanding would strip the very character these owners paid for. So on a Ririe refinish, we sand to preserve the grain and knots, not erase them. We choose finishes that deepen the wood's warmth rather than flatten it. Knotty pine is soft and dents easily, so it calls for a careful hand and a tougher topcoat in high-traffic rooms. Hickory is the opposite, hard and wild-grained, and it demands sharp abrasives and patience to sand evenly. These homes also take hard outdoor use. Boots, dogs, firewood and river gear come and go, and entries wear fastest, so a boot zone and periodic recoat protect the floor without a full sand-down. The foothills run dry in winter under woodstove and furnace heat. That shrinks solid boards and opens seasonal gaps, so we acclimate on site and leave room to move. The aim is a floor that looks at home in the canyon, not in a showroom.
On the ground
Ririe Reservoir, Heise and the canyon homes
Ririe grew as a small farm town named for homesteader David Ririe, who settled here in 1888, and today it's best known as a recreation gateway. Ririe Reservoir, built on Willow Creek and opened in 1978, draws anglers for rainbow trout and smallmouth bass, and Heise Hot Springs just upriver runs a 104-degree pool and a 350-foot water slide. Kelly Canyon Ski Area is a short drive up, which keeps winter boot traffic heavy. US-26 is the main route through, running along the South Fork of the Snake toward Swan Valley. The homes we work split between the town grid and the foothill acreage, and the acreage work drives the rustic-flooring demand. Typical jobs here are refinishing knotty pine and hickory while keeping the character, repairing dented soft-pine boards, fitting hardwood stairs in split-level and log homes, and new installs in cabins. We moisture-test before installing, acclimate material to the dry canyon air, and write every quote after measuring on site rather than guessing by phone.

K Lee, thank you for trusting us with your home and flooring. I am glad you are happy with the floors — you were a pleasure to work for.
“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ
Ririe flooring questions
Can you refinish our knotty pine floor without sanding out the knots and character?
Yes — that's the whole point with rustic floors. We sand to level and clean the wood while leaving the knots, color variation and natural marks that give it character. Then we choose a finish that warms the grain instead of flattening it. Over-sanding a character floor erases what makes it worth keeping, so we work it with a lighter, careful hand.
Our soft pine floor dents easily near the woodstove and door — what helps?
Pine is soft, so dents come with the territory, but a few things help. A tougher topcoat in high-traffic rooms resists everyday knocks, and a boot zone with mats catches the worst grit. For existing dents, we can repair or swap boards and blend them into the rustic finish rather than refinishing the whole room.
Do you install hardwood stairs to match a log home's floors?
We do. Log and split-level homes around Ririe often have carpeted stairs that look out of place next to rustic wood floors. We build and finish treads in the same species and character grade, so the stairs read as part of the floor rather than an afterthought. Estimates for stairs are free and written.
