Wood Flooring in Menan, Idaho

Menan sits on the Snake River bottomland below the Menan Buttes, about 25 minutes from our Idaho Falls base. The high irrigation-season water table keeps crawlspaces damp here, so cupped boards are the floor problem we see most. Call (844) 954-6342 and we answer or return it within one business hour, then moisture-test before we quote.

Menan, Idaho

Life below the Buttes and the water-table problem

Menan sits low, on the Snake River bottomland where the Henry's Fork and the South Fork come together beneath the twin Menan Buttes. The ground is flat river bottom and the water table sits close to the surface. From spring through late summer, irrigation canals and flooded fields push it higher still. Under a lot of Menan homes, that means a crawlspace that runs humid for months. Moisture doesn't stay under the house. It rises as vapor through the subfloor into the wood above, and the underside of each board takes on more moisture than the finished top. The board swells on the bottom, and the edges lift: that's cupping, and in Menan it's less an accident than a seasonal pattern. Chasing it with sanding alone is a mistake, because a floor sanded flat while wet will cup the other way once it dries. The fix starts underneath, with a proper vapor barrier over the crawlspace soil, better ventilation, and sometimes addressing standing water before any board is touched. Only once the moisture is controlled and the floor has stabilized do we flatten, repair or replace. On new installs we moisture-test the subfloor and the home, then acclimate the wood. We often steer owners toward engineered plank or LVP, which ride out bottomland humidity far better than solid nail-down hardwood.

Working the Snake River bottoms at Menan

Menan is one of the valley's oldest settlements, founded by Latter-day Saint pioneers in 1879 and first called Poole's Island. It sits in Jefferson County, part of the Idaho Falls metro, on farm ground below the Menan Buttes. The North Butte is a National Natural Landmark and a BLM Area of Critical Environmental Concern, a tuff cone that erupted through the river's cold water and rises some 800 feet above the plain. The Buttes trail draws hikers, and farmland wraps the town on every side. Our calls here are dominated by moisture: cupped and buckled boards, soft spots from crawlspace humidity, and homeowners wanting an install that won't do the same. The honest work on many jobs is under the floor first, barriers and ventilation, before the wood. Where owners want new flooring, we lean toward engineered plank and LVP and moisture-test every time. Solid hardwood can still work in a drier, well-sealed home, but only after the readings back it up. Every estimate is measured and written on site.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ

Menan flooring questions

The boards in our Menan home cup every summer — why, and can you fix it?

It's the water table. From spring through irrigation season, moisture rises from the damp crawlspace into the underside of your boards, swelling their edges so they cup. The lasting fix starts below the floor — a vapor barrier and better ventilation — not with sanding. Once the crawlspace is dry and the wood settles, we flatten or replace what moved. Call (844) 954-6342.

Should we even put solid hardwood in a home below the Menan Buttes?

Sometimes, but only after moisture tells us it's safe. On this bottomland, many homes do better with engineered plank or waterproof LVP, which stay flat through the humid months. If your crawlspace is well-sealed and the readings are good, solid hardwood can work. We test first and recommend honestly rather than selling you a floor that will cup.
