Pocatello, Idaho

Pocatello's Old Town homes and their old-growth fir

Pocatello grew as a railroad town, the Union Pacific and Oregon Short Line junction that gave the city its Gate City nickname. That railroad money built the neighborhoods we work in most. The Old Town Residential Historic District, on streets like South Garfield near the Portneuf River, holds homes from the 1890s through the 1920s: a rare Second Empire house from 1894, plus rows of Craftsman bungalows and American Four-Squares from around 1915. The West Side is older-home country too, named Idaho's best old-house neighborhood by a national magazine in 2010. Those early homes were floored with old-growth softwood, mostly tight-grained Douglas fir, with oak in the finer rooms. That fir is a different animal from today's lumber. It was milled from slow-grown timber, so the grain is dense and the boards are often full thickness, which means they can take a careful sanding and come back beautifully even after a century of wear. We treat it with respect: a light cut rather than an aggressive one, filler and lace-ins where radiators or walls left scars, and a finish that suits the age of the house. Fir dents more easily than oak and shows every heel mark, so we talk through finish sheen and durability before we start. For many Pocatello owners the right move is restoring the original floor, not covering a genuinely historic one with new product.

On the ground

From Old Town to the ISU benches in Pocatello

Pocatello runs along the Portneuf River valley between the benches, with the railroad corridor splitting downtown from the historic residential districts. Old Town's commercial blocks sit near Union Pacific Avenue, and the residential historic district climbs the streets just west and south. Idaho State University anchors the east side, and student rentals, faculty homes and 1950s-and-later subdivisions fill the benches above the old core. Our Pocatello work tracks that geography. In Old Town and the West Side it is restoring fir and oak, stair work where a carpeted flight becomes wood, and careful board matching in protected historic homes. On the newer benches and around ISU it is installs, engineered plank over basement slabs and rental turnovers between tenants. Stairs come up often here because so many homes step up from a split entry or down to a finished basement. Pocatello is a longer run from our base, so we measure thoroughly, read moisture on below-grade levels and put a written quote in your hands on the first visit instead of a second trip.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ

Pocatello flooring questions

Should I restore the old fir floor in my Old Town Pocatello home?

Usually it is worth it. The old-growth Douglas fir in Pocatello's 1890s-1920s homes was milled from dense, slow-grown timber and often has plenty of thickness left. A careful light sanding and the right finish bring it back without erasing a historic floor. We check wear and softness first. Call (844) 954-6342 to take a look.

Can you convert my carpeted stairs to hardwood?

Yes, that is common work here. Many Pocatello homes step up from a split entry or down to a finished basement with carpeted flights. We strip the treads, fit solid hardwood treads and risers, and match them to your floor's species and finish. Done right, the stairs tie into the main floor as one continuous look.

Do you install over basement slabs near ISU?

Yes. Solid hardwood cannot sit on concrete, which carries moisture up into the boards and leads to cupping. For the finished basements common in bench-area and student rentals near ISU, we read the slab's moisture, then fit engineered hardwood or waterproof LVP, floated or glued, which are made for below-grade rooms.
