Chubbuck, Idaho
Chubbuck split-levels and their carpeted half-flights
Chubbuck is a newer city than its neighbor Pocatello, and its housing shows it. Much of the town filled in from the 1970s through the 2000s with split-level, bi-level and tri-level homes, the floor plans that were in fashion as the subdivisions went up along Yellowstone Avenue and the Hiline corridor. Those designs share a feature that drives a lot of our work: short carpeted half-flights connecting the staggered levels, usually four to eight steps between the entry, the main floor and the lower level. Carpet on those stairs wears out fast and dates a house, so Chubbuck owners regularly ask to convert them to wood. It is more involved than it looks. A split-level flight was often built as a rough carpeted stringer, not finished for exposed treads, so we have to measure each step, account for the carpet and pad thickness that is coming off, and build or cap treads and risers that sit level and code-friendly. We match the new treads to the floor they land on, whether that is existing hardwood, new plank or LVP. Alongside the stairs, the main floors in these homes are prime for carpet-to-hardwood or LVP conversions, and the 1970s and 1980s houses sometimes have original parquet or strip oak worth refinishing. We read each level for moisture, since the lower floor often sits partly below grade on a slab.

Covering Chubbuck from Yellowstone Avenue out
Chubbuck sits immediately north of Pocatello, bordered by I-86 and threaded by Yellowstone Avenue, its main commercial spine, and the Hiline Road corridor. The city blends retail along Yellowstone with blocks of postwar-into-recent subdivisions, and it keeps growing as new homes fill in toward the north and west. Because the stock skews newer than Pocatello's, our Chubbuck work is less historic restoration and more conversion and installation. Stair-tread retrofits are the signature job, turning carpeted split-level flights into hardwood. Around them we do carpet-to-hardwood and LVP conversions on main floors, engineered plank over below-grade slabs in the lower levels, and refinishing where a 1970s or 1980s home still has its original oak. Water repairs come up where a lower-level slab or an appliance line let moisture into the floor. Chubbuck is close to an hour from our Idaho Falls base, so we group the measuring, moisture-read every level and hand over a written quote on the first trip, which keeps the project moving without an extra visit just to price it.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ
Chubbuck flooring questions
Can you turn the carpeted stairs in my Chubbuck split-level into hardwood?
Yes, it is our most common Chubbuck job. Split-level flights were usually built as rough carpeted stringers, so we measure each step, allow for the carpet and pad coming off, and fit level, code-friendly treads and risers. We match them to the floor they meet. Call (844) 954-6342 for a written quote.
Should I worry about moisture in my lower-level floor?
Yes, it is worth checking. In many Chubbuck split-levels and bi-levels the lowest floor sits partly below grade on a concrete slab, which can pass moisture that cups solid wood. We moisture-test that level first, then recommend engineered hardwood or waterproof LVP where the readings call for it, rather than nailing solid wood to the slab.
