Firth farmhouses and the layers under the linoleum
Firth grew up as a Swedish farm settlement in the 1880s, strung along the east bank of the Snake River facing the Blackfoot Mountains. The town itself formed around 1903, when the Oregon Short Line shifted its water tank a mile south from Basalt and houses followed the depot. What that history leaves us is a stock of modest farmhouses and bungalows, many remodeled a half-dozen times. Peel back a kitchen or hallway in one and you often find sheet linoleum, then a plywood underlayment, then narrow fir laid decades ago. That fir is usually worth saving. It sanded thin in spots and shows cut nails, but a careful screen and refinish brings back a floor no big-box product matches. The catch in older Firth homes is what sits under the vinyl. Sheet goods and black cutback mastic installed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, and sanding or ripping them blind is the wrong move. We plan removal around that: test first through a lab when age is uncertain, and never grind unknown mastic. River-bottom lots here also run damp crawlspaces during irrigation season, so we read moisture under the house before we commit to solid wood. Where the subfloor has swelled or a leak rotted the decking, we replace the bad sections, flatten the field, and only then lay finish. It is slower, but it is how a Firth floor lasts.

Getting around Firth and the work we see
Firth is small and easy to cover. State Street, which is US-91, carries the town north to south, with the school campus, the city park and the little grid of homes just off it. North of town, Basalt still marks where the railroad siding started; south, the highway runs toward Shelley and Blackfoot past farm ground and canal crossings. Most of our calls here are not whole-house installs. They are an owner who lifted a corner of carpet or lino and wants to know whether the wood beneath is worth refinishing, a farmhouse hallway worn through at the traffic path, or cupped boards near a back door that took years of boot runoff. We also get the full remodel where a kitchen tears out to the studs and new hardwood needs to run flush into an older living-room floor. Because Firth sits a short drive down the highway, we can usually get out to measure quickly, read the moisture, check how much fir is left above the tongue, and put a written number in your hands rather than a phone guess.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ
Firth flooring questions
Is the fir under my Firth farmhouse carpet worth refinishing?
Often yes. Many Firth farmhouses have narrow fir laid in the early 1900s hiding under carpet or linoleum. We lift a corner to check how much wood sits above the tongue and whether past sandings left enough. Fir dents easily but takes a warm finish, so if there is meat left, refinishing beats replacement. Call (844) 954-6342 and we will look.
Can you safely remove old linoleum in an older home here?
Yes, with testing first. Sheet vinyl and black cutback mastic installed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, so we do not grind or tear it blind. When a floor's age is uncertain, we have it lab-tested, plan proper abatement if it is positive, and only sand once the area is clear. That keeps a Firth remodel safe and sensible.
